Every time when loadshedding was put into operation the excuses for it was changed. If it is not this then it is that. First it was the Guptas and captures, the hijackings. That is a crime to hijack and capture. Then it was low quality coal, then there was a shortage of diesel and water and now Mozambique’s cyclone has been the excuse. Let’s not forget even the municipalities which didn’t pay their debts was an excuse. Even sabotage was an excuse. Are we in store for any other excuses? Let’s wait for that. Eskom and government have started planning for Stage 5 and Stage 6 loadshedding. This could ignite a race against time to avoid national blackout. At the moment the national grid is under extreme pressure and loadshedding may escalate. An extensive briefing by Eskom executives and the Department of Public Enterprises on Tuesday has made it clear that the national power supply is more precarious than previously understood. South Africa has bought all available diesel on the high seas, maintenance of power plants is in crisis because boiler tubes are bursting at eight units across three power stations and there is a planned strike early in April. ESKOM woes continue. Load shedding was scheduled this week up until Saturday. The latest shedding which has changed from stage 2 to 4 has now also been blamed on the Cyclone that hit Mozambique at the weekend. For more on SA’s energy crisis we are now joined by Mining and Energy Advisor Ted Blom.
