Mei 2000 – Nederland – Eschede woongebied

The Dutch town of Enschede was declared as a disaster area after an explosion in a fireworks warehouse killed at least 20 people and left 100 wounded.   Amateur film footage showed a huge fireball rising over Enschede. Dozens of secondary explosions rocked the small town.

SE Fireworks was a major importer of fireworks from China and supplier to pop concerts and major festive events in the Netherlands.   Prior to the disaster it had a good safety record and met all safety audits.

A 40-hectare (100-acre; 0.4 km2) area around the warehouse was destroyed by the blast. Enschede was built around the SE Fireworks factory, which is the only one in the Netherlands to be located in a residential area;   this caused around 400 houses to be destroyed, 15 streets incinerated and a total of 1,500 homes damaged, leaving 1,250 people homeless, essentially obliterating the neighbourhood of Roombeek. Ten thousand residents were evacuated, and damages eventually exceeded 1 billion guilders (€454 million).

The mayor said last night: ‘This is truly a calamity.’ Ten firefighters were missing, he said, but it was not clear whether they were included in the figure of 20 dead.   The explosions rocked heavily populated parts of Enschede, 85 miles east of Amsterdam.     Fire crews were called in from nearby Germany and casualties were ferried to hospitals in other Dutch cities as Enschede struggled to cope . A local air force base was also being used to treat the wounded.

The explosion was felt in neighbouring towns, blew out windows across Enschede and set fire to the city’s Grolsch brewery.    ‘We heard a huge explosion and then we thought, we’re finished,’ an unidentified eyewitness told RTL-4 television station. ‘We had no idea what was happening.   All we knew was there was no place to escape.’    ‘I was sitting in a cafe and all of a sudden there was a huge explosion. Beer glasses shattered, window panes were blown out and people were hit by slabs of concrete,” said a teenager.

A statement issued by the municipality said the explosion was the result of a fire that broke out at the SE fireworks warehouse during the afternoon. The cause of the fire was not immediately known but it followed a spell of unseasonably warm and exceptionally dry weather, with temperatures in the upper 20s.
