Eight days already gone into war of flames – heavy fighting continues as Turkey presses on with its military operation,  against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria.  Turkey’s president,  Erdogan said the military action aims to remove the Kurdish-led forces from the border area and create a “safe zone” to which millions of Syrian refugees can be returned.

The move came after the United States announced it was withdrawing its troops from the area, leaving the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), its main ally in the battle against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) armed group, without US military support.

17 October 2019 – Turkish President Erdogan is expected to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice President Mike Pence in Ankara to discuss the Turkish offensive in northeast Syria.

France has already announced it is halting exports of any arms to Turkey that could be used in its offensive against Kurds in Syria while Germany’s foreign minister has announced it will curtail its arms exports to Turkey.

It was confirmed by Turkey representatives, they have received a sophisticated Russian surface-to-air missile system, defying U.S. threats for more than a year that purchasing the S-400s would result in harsh retaliation against the fellow NATO ally.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to keep fighting in Syria until all his country’s goals have been met. Erdogan is shrugging off international pressure for an immediate ceasefire and the battle on the ground goes on. Diplomatic efforts to end the fighting are also intensifying. US Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Turkey to push for a ceasefire. The US delegation is due to meet the Turkish president. They come armed with President Trump’s threat of more sanctions if they are ignored. But that is unlikely to sway Erdogan. Meanwhile, the United Nations special envoy for Syria is in Damascus is calling for an immediate end to the Turkish operation citing humanitarian concerns.

Turkey has launched another operation in Syria and is aiming to create a peace corridor by clearing out terrorist militias so the refugees it is hosting can return to Syria.

15 July 2019 – Turkey has called President Trump’s bluff and completed the historic purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defense system. Daniel McAdams of the Ron Paul Institute joins Scottie Nell Hughes to discuss. He argues that the importance of the move “cannot be overstated.” He points out that Turkey’s army is the second-largest in NATO and that if the White House imposes promised sanctions on Turkey over the purchase it will push Ankara further into the embrace of Iran and Russia.

Donald Trump on Wednesday played down the crisis in Syria touched off by Turkey’s incursion against US-allied Kurdish forces, saying the conflict was between Turkey and Syria and that it was okay for Russia to help Damascus. The US president, speaking to reporters at the White House, said the Kurds were ‘no angels’ Trump claims Kurds are ‘no angels’ as he praises Turkish offensive.
