Daar was vroeg in 2021 groot herstelwerk gedoen by die uitgebrande substasie waar toerusting vervang is.

Various fires the recent years.
Officials in uMhlathuze are trying to get to the bottom of the fires that have recently broken out at some of the city’s substations.
Same as the other articles – In the early hour of Sunday morning, parts of Richards Bay were in the dark after a transformer was destroyed by a blaze at the Scorpio substation near the Hillside Smelter. A month ago a transformer at the city’s Polaris substation caught alight, cutting off electricity supply to the CBD and some suburbs.
It has been noted, however, that the electricity infrastructure is old and at times cannot manage the load. It was stated that the city is planning to mitigate this through investing in new transformers, not only to replace the damaged ones but to stabilise the power supply in the whole city.

POWER in Richards Bay CBD was restored timeously this morning after a substation blowout led to a city-wide blackout. The Scorpio substation next to South 32’s Hillside operation short-circuited at about 2am, reportedly resulting in a large explosion and fire.
ALERT: There is no electricity in Richards Bay CBD after the Scorpio substation blew in the early hours of this morning. Other suburbs including Aquadene, Arboretum, Birdswood, Brackenham and Veldenvlei are also affected. Municipal workers are attending to it but there is no indication as to how long power will be off. The outage has affected all traffic lights so motorists are urged to take extra care on the wet roads.

While fallen cables sparked Monday night’s power outage across Richards Bay, the Polaris substation blew up during the night, compounding the situation.
The majority of Bay residents were literally left in the dark last night, with the different suburbs experiencing power outages of different durations. Initiallyit was reported that the cause had been determined and attributed to cables that had collapsed across the road near the west entrance of the Port of Richards Bay.
The estimated repair time was in the vicinity of five hours. However, just after 7pm, power was restored to Meerensee and was intermittently restored to other suburbs, only to go off again after a short time, and then again in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
This second power failure was caused by the Polaris substation blowing up during the night. Olga Rudolph, a Veldenvlei resident, stated that her power was on for only five minutes before it went off again. Most areas were again, without power.
Electricity was only fully restored to Richards Bay at 6.50am, which left many residents upset as their schedules had been impeded by the outage. Barbara Skinner and her family were seriously affected, owing to her children struggling to study for their exams the following day.
Mdu Ncalane, uMhlathuze Municipal communications officer said that the loss of the Polaris substation would lead to planned power outages in the near future, owing to the strain that is being placed on the grid. The damaged pylon which set the whole outage in motion, may take close to a month to be fully repaired.
