Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng – prayer

Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has defended his prayer against vaccines that "corrupt the DNA of the people".

“Where did you get this thing of separating my judicial responsibilities from my Christian beliefs from? Where can we look for it in the constitution or anywhere else?

“The last time I checked the constitution, it lists among the fundamental rights — freedom of religion, freedom of opinion and freedom of thought.”

In the name of Jesus and it is a constitutional right to pray.

Daaroor is ookal geskryf.

Voedsel was weerhou.

Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been captured on video praying about vaccines being “of the devil” and corrupting people’s DNA — with his comments raising the hackles of one of the country’s top vaccine experts.  He was speaking at an event at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng.

THE PRAYER ON TWITTER

“I lock out any vaccine that is not of you. If there be any vaccine that is of the devil, meant to infuse 666 in the lives of people, meant to corrupt their DNA… any such vaccine…may it be destroyed by fire,” Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng prays at Tembisa Hospital on 10 December 2020.

*

In what his office confirmed as a prayer, the nearly two-minute video which is circulating widely on social media has Mogoeng starting out by saying:

“Whatever phase is said to be coming, Lord I judge it, I run it down in the name of Jesus. I lock out every demon of Covid-19.”

This is in apparent reference to comments health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize made on Wednesday that the country was officially in its “second wave” of Covid-19 infections.   But Mogoeng then switches immediately to talk about vaccines, touching on issues raised in anti-vax circles.

“I lock out any vaccine that is not of you,” he prays. “If there be any vaccine that is of the devil, meant to infuse triple-six (666) in the lives of people, meant to corrupt their DNA … Any such vaccine, Lord God almighty, may it be destroyed by fire in the name of Jesus.”

Wits University virology professor Barry Schoub, who heads the ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19, told TimesLIVE:

“It is unfortunate that someone of that stature is misleading people because vaccines are such a major part of controlling this epidemic and it is unfortunate that someone with such influence is opposing efforts to control it.”

He said he had worked in vaccinology for decades and, often, there were two kinds of people who oppose vaccines. The first was an anti-vaxxer activist group that “actively opposes all types of vaccinations based on conspiracy theories and unproven claims”. The second are “vaccine-hesitant people” who are “genuinely nervous”, and who become vulnerable to fake information that is spread.

In this context, he said, Mogoeng’s words might create hesitancy among those who were previously hopeful of the vaccines.

“The former group [anti-vaxxers] you cannot convince. The success rate is not good. But the second group, the hesitant ones, need to be reassured and comforted that vaccines are safe,” said Schoub.

He said the “balance between risk and benefit has to be vastly in favour of benefit, which is why all vaccines go through such vigorous trials to ensure safety”. He added that the development of a Covid-19 vaccine had been shown to be “extraordinarily safe”.

The fact that they use a novel technology — known as Messenger RNA — was “all the more reason for even more rigorous examination”.

The spokesperson for the office of the chief justice,  Nathi Mncube, confirmed on Thursday evening that Mogoeng was speaking at the event at the hospital.

“He didn’t make a statement. He was praying. It wasn’t a speech. He was praying after he had given his speech. It’s a prayer to God,” he said.

Mncube said Mogoeng was speaking at press briefing on Friday morning on unrelated issues, but that people could ask about any matter.

Mogoeng’s prayer drew mixed reaction on social media, with some applauding and others criticising the judge for his comments.

On Tuesday, Britain became the first country to roll out a Covid-19 vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNtech, to its population.

In SA, experts told The Sunday Times the country needs a Covid-19 vaccine by April but the government would have to be cautious in choosing a vaccine best suited to the country.

“We have to spend our money on vaccines wisely as we don’t have the deep pockets of wealthy nations,” Covid-19 ministerial advisory vaccines committee member Prof Helen Rees said.

Rees chairs SA’s health products regulatory authority and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations.

Finance minister Tito Mboweni told parliament last week that the government has until December 15 to pay the R500m required for it to be part of the Covax global Covid-19 vaccine distribution scheme — giving  SA early access to a batch of vaccines.

In the rest of his prayer, Mogoeng took aim at the corrupt, and against people who want to “eat along with their friends”.

“Any legalising agent, Lord, for wickedness in this nation, for wickedness in Africa and across the nations of the world, Lord God almighty, send your angels, send even your angel of the media, send all the angels of fire, the angel of judgment, the angel of the wings of the Lord, to enforce your will. In the name of Jesus, no more suffering, Lord. No more suffering.

“Revive the economy of this country. For you have told us, Lord, there are many hidden minerals still that will only surface when righteousness emerges.

“My Father and my God, if there be any leader in this nation who is serving himself or herself to the exclusion of the people, pretending to be a good leader, you know them. Accept they repent. Judge them without delay.

“My God, I say it and will never apologise for praying, judge the evil ones who want to corrupt this country and eat along with their friends. Time for their judgment is now, in the name of Jesus,” he said.

Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng on Friday took a swipe on those who criticised his stance on “evil” vaccines “meant to corrupt the DNA of the people”.

Speaking at the annual judiciary report media briefing, Mogoeng said those who could vouch for the effectiveness of the vaccine and that it did not have side-effects, must be the ones who propagated it.

“I’m not a scientist … I will pray for God’s intervention.”

Mogoeng emphasised his belief in Christianity and said he would not stop praying to God to act against vaccines that could potentially affect people’s lives negatively.   “I’m crying unto God, whether you call it political or not, and I won’t stop.

“If there is a vaccine with 666, I want God to destroy it. If there is any vaccine meant to corrupt the DNA of people, I’m asking God to interrupt it. Any clean vaccine, they must produce it quickly. People need that for their own health,” said an emotionally charged Mogoeng.

“So if anybody says ‘don’t pray about 666; don’t pray against Satan; don’t pray against corruption on the DNA’, they can criticise until, until. I’m not worried about that.

“My prayer is meant for, and I hope it does touch, every well-meaning Christian to cry unto God and say ‘Lord if there is any vaccine that would negatively affect the lives of people, that vaccine must never see the light of day. You can’t say we must, as Christians, just fold our arms and say ‘whatever people come with’ is fine. No. We can’t.”

Mogoeng  said he accepted that there are people who would agree with his view and take it as a prayer point and those who would reject it.

“That’s how it’s supposed to be. I’m not a scientist. I’m a prayer warrior and I’m encouraging prayer warriors to pray.”

Mogoeng also decried the “notion” that he as a chief justice should separate religion from his job.

“Where did you get this thing of separating my judicial responsibilities from my Christian beliefs from? Where can we look for it in the constitution or anywhere else?

“The last time I checked the constitution, it lists among the fundamental rights — freedom of religion, freedom of opinion and freedom of thought.”

He said not only did the preamble to the constitution talk about God or God to protect and bless the nation, but the national anthem also alluded to a need to pray to God for protection.

“This notion that we must separate the state from religion is misplaced.”

He said while he knew there was corruption in the world, he was not in a position to tell who the culprits were.

“I’m basically saying I believe that we know so much about corruption practitioners in South Africa and across the world, but God knows everything. Anybody who’s looking clean and smart, pointing fingers at others as the corrupt when they themselves are corrupt, must be exposed. I don’t have the power to do that but I’m asking God, in whose unlimited power I have confidence, to expose them and judge them.”

Mogoeng further said he would not keep quiet when he did not agree with a certain issue.

“This is a free country. People must be careful of wanting to take us back to the era of colonialism and apartheid, where freedom of thought and opinion was not allowed. I’m not going to be silenced. I don’t care about the consequences,” he said.

“We’ve been quiet for too long toeing the line. I’m not going to toe any line and it does not matter how many people criticise me.

“When I believe that I need to address this issue, I am going to do it. When I feel the prompting of God to address it, I will.”

South Africa’s chief justice on Friday vehemently defended a prayer he made against “satanic” Covid-19 vaccines, seeming to refer to a conspiracy theory that they could “infuse 666” into people’s DNA.     Mogoeng Mogoeng, a devout Christian, came under strong criticism on social media following the prayer at an event in Johannesburg on Thursday to honour people who died from Covid-19 in Africa’s hardest-hit country.

“I lockout every demon of Covid-19, I lock out any vaccine that is not of you, if there be any vaccine that is of the devil meant to infuse 666 in the lives of people, meant to corrupt your DNA,” he said in the prayer.   On Friday he told a media conference that he would not be dissuaded from speaking against or praying against possible “satanic” vaccines.       “You can’t say we must, as Christians, just fold our arms and say ‘whatever people come with’ is fine. No. We can’t,” he said.

“If there is a vaccine with 666, I want God to destroy it. If there is any vaccine meant to corrupt the DNA of people, I’m asking God to interrupt it. Any clean vaccine, they must produce it quickly,” he said.    On Wednesday South Africa declared that it had entered a second wave of the pandemic as the number of new infections surged, with nearly 837,000 cumulative cases and more than 22,700 deaths.    The government has warned against spreading misinformation about the coronavirus, as it waits to secure its first vaccine doses through the COVAX global distribution scheme.

But Mogoeng said he was unfazed by any backlash and that nothing stopped him from commenting on any issues because of his judicial responsibilities.   “This is a free country. I’m not going to be silenced. I don’t care about the consequences,” he said.

3 gedagtes oor “Chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng – prayer”
