A group of ANC members wants party President Cyril Ramaphosa disciplined for allegedly influencing party elections despite Parliament and the Constitutional Court clearing Ramaphosa. Onica Maphisa, a representative of the signatories, said they do not understand when he was cleared in parliament and by who.

Why all the secrecy?
In court, there are different litigations that are still going on that might not be from the ANC itself. There are different people that have taken the president to court on the same matter of the bank statements that he has sealed. Their belief is that if you are an honest member of the ANC, you should not be sealing documents. You are speaking of transparency and speaking of rooting out corruption but there are still things that you do not want people to see.

THERE have been calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to be disciplined after taking money from private funders to campaign for his presidential election campaign during the run-up to the 2017 ANC elective conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg.
During a press briefing in Johannesburg, signatories of the ANC in eight provinces called for the ANC disciplinary committee to take action against the party’s number one. The Western Cape was the only one of the nine South African provinces not to take part in the call. Ramaphosa used the ‘CR17 Campaign’, that he established to advance his personal presidential ambitions, as the fund-raising and fund distribution tool. None of this is any longer under dispute, it is common cause that this was done, as established in two court hearings.

The Pretoria high court has ruled against the unsealing of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s “CR17” campaign bank records. The campaign preceded his election as president of the ANC in 2017. The application was dismissed with costs.
The EFF had asked the court to lift a seal on the information that was placed by Aubrey Ledwaba, deputy judge president of the Gauteng division of the high court.
The records were obtained by public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane during her CR17 investigation. She handed the records to the high court when the president challenged her report.
Under the rules of court, documents submitted to court usually puts them in the public domain. This time however, at the request of Ramaphosa’s lawyers, Ledwaba sealed the bank statements from the public, saying if anyone wished to challenge this they could raise it “in court”.
