The Clicks Group has decided to close its Musica entertainment business due to the shift to digital consumption of music, movies and games, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Acquired by the pharmacy group in 1992, Musica has been the country’s leading music and entertainment retail brand for decades. Musica has already closed 19 stores since the start of its 2021 financial year in September and is currently trading from 59, Clicks said. The remaining stores will be closed as leases expire over the next four months.

Annual reports
2016 year

2017 year
Clicks, Musica, The Body Shop, GNC and Claire’s are market-leading brands and have a combined footprint of 795 stores, including 38 in the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho.
Musica Stores: 113
The structural changes in the music market with the move to streaming and downloading, together with a weak release schedule, contributed to Musica’s sales declining by 7% on last year. Musica continues to gain market share and now has over 77% of the country’s music market and close to 60% of the movie market. Shareholders should note that all Musica’s 113 stores are profitable and the business continues to generate cash. Management aims to further derisk Musica by moving to consignment stock with suppliers, a business model successfully employed by leading music retailers in the UK and Europe.

2018 year
Retail turnover, including Clicks, The Body Shop, GNC, Claire’s and Musica, increased by 10.8%. Retail selling price inflation was low at only 1.4%. Comparable stores sales grew by 5.5%. Within the retail division, health and beauty sales increased by 11.7%, reflecting the resilient nature of the core Clicks business. Musica’s sales were 8.4% lower owing to the pressure on discretionary consumer spending and the increase in digital consumption of music and movies.

Indien daar nog altyd ‘n mark vir Boeremusiek of goeie Afrikaanse musiek was, sal daar altyd deure oopgaan vir nuwe deure.
