Police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said: “It is alleged that the deceased was with two other men at Menlyn Maine when one of them approached the suspect, when an altercation ensued.”    She said preliminary reports “indicated that the suspect retreated to his vehicle and returned with a firearm and fired more than one shot at the deceased, who was attempting to defuse the situation”.

The man died on the spot.

Police confiscated the firearm and were still to establish the motive of the shooting, Peters said.  The suspect will soon appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge.   The incident sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing their anger and frustration.   “I have a very bad feeling that some family members of the deceased at Menlyn Maine haven’t received the devastating news… and now they are about to find out through the internet,” read a tweet.

Very sad

“Preliminary reports further indicate that the suspect retreated to his vehicle and returned with a firearm, fired more than one shot and the man who was attempting to defuse the situation was hit,” Peters added.

She said the motive behind the shooting was unknown “at this stage”.

“The arrested suspect will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon, on a charge of murder.”

Spokesperson for Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit Casper Visser said paramedics were called to the scene following the shooting.

Visser said the victim, believed to be in his 40s, later succumbed to his injuries after medics tried to resuscitate him for 15 minutes.

The shopping centre confirmed the incident.

“Menlyn Maine security was immediately on the scene and SAPS arrived soon thereafter, to take over,” a spokesperson said.

The victim, according to Peters, died about 15 minutes after EMS medics tried to resuscitate him on the scene. There is not much information about the suspect, except that he is a 45-year-old male.

The motive is tied to the altercation, it’s believed. However, investigators still have a lot of puzzles to piece together in solving this one.

“The arrested suspect will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon, on a charge of murder,” Peters revealed.

The parking lot of the Menlyn Maine shopping centre has been cordoned off for forensic inspection, since the shooting. The group that was with the suspect has not been identified as they are officially eyewitnesses of an active murder investigation.
