Breaking: Eskom intensify load shedding, Stage 4 put in place
We were all having a good moan about Stage 2 load shedding making our Monday miserable. But, oh, how we yearn for such an illuminated period of time now. The problem with the power is getting worse and Eskom have resorted to implementing a Stage 4 schedule up until 22:00.
In an updated statement issued on Monday, the much-maligned energy firm said that six generating units had been lost, putting further strain on an already-depleted system. Eskom have reiterated calls for both businesses and residents to use electricity sparingly to help with the supply recovery.
What is Stage 4 load shedding?
Stage 4 allows for up to 4000 MW of the national load to be shed. Doubles the frequency of Stage 2, which means you will be scheduled for load shedding 12 times over a four day period for two hours at a time, or 12 times over an eight-day period for four hours at a time. South Africans are advised to switch off all plug sockets during power cuts.
“When the power comes back on, it may do so with a momentary surge, which may damage electronically controlled appliances such as computers, television sets, DVDs, etc. Remember to reset the time-control clocks on cooking ovens, pool pumps, geysers and other automatically controlled appliances, unless these are battery operated.”
Eskom
Load shedding latest news for Monday 11 February
In the past, Eskom has relied on open cycle gas turbines (OCGT) to buffer supply shortages – unfortunately, the cost of diesel needed to run these generators has become unaffordable for the financially embattled state ownedenterprise. As such, Eskom notes that its operational position is ‘weak’.
Stage 4 load shedding has not been seen since 2015, when rolling blackouts were at their peak. There’s a shortage of capacity forecast for the rest of the week, but the firm are wary that these outages could last until April.
