The American endurance swimmer Lynne Cox became the first person to swim across the Bering Strait on  7 August 1987.    She swam 2.7 miles (4.3 km) from Little Diomede Island (Alaska, USA) to Big Diomede Island (Soviet Union) in ~33°F to 38°F (approx. 0.5°C to 3.3°C) near-freezing water without a wetsuit, taking about 2 hours and 6 to 16 minutes. The historic swim helped ease Cold War tensions.

It looks exactly like bears growling at each other.

That narrow gap separates Big Diomede, a Russian island, from Little Diomede, an Alaskan island, in the Bering Strait. On a clear day, people on either island can see the other with

Lynne Cox is an American long-distance open water swimmer, writer, and speaker. She is best known for being the first person to swim between the United States and the Soviet Union, across the Bering.

In 1998, Dmitry Shparo and his son skied across the frozen strait. French adventurer Dimitri Kieffer and Briton Karl Bushby walked across the frozen strait in 15 days in 2006.

Additional solo swimmers include Joseph Oakes (with wetsuit), Marcos Diaz (with wetsuit) and Elena Guseva (without a wetsuit in 1998), plus Alexander Brylin and Grigorii Prokopchuk in 2014.

Across the Bering Strait, Big Diomede belongs to Russia while Little Diomede belongs to the United States. Although the islands are close enough to see each other on a clear day, they

A multi-national team of ice and open-water swimmers completed a major relay swim across the Bering Strait in August 2013, featuring participants such as Ram Barkai, Toks Viviers and Andrew Chin from South Africa, alongside international swimmers from Russia, the UK, Ireland, Argentina, Estonia, and others.

Just 3.8 kilometers apart in the Bering Strait, Big Diomede and Little Diomede form one of the closest points between the United States and Russia. Big Diomede belongs to Russia; Little Diomede to the ...
