Seelewe – anemone

*

Sea anemones are industrious creatures, spending much of their lives extracting food from the water column to survive. A sea anemone is an unusual-looking aquatic animal that belongs to the Actiniaria order. Although they are living organisms, these creatures were in fact named for their resemblance to the terrestrial anemone flower. The flower-like appearance comes from numerous rows of tentacles that surround the oral disc in a crown formation, much like that of a sunflower. These tentacles can be completely retracted inside the body column to protect itself from predators, and also when it catches prey. The tentacles are covered in nematocysts, which are specialized cells that certain species contain to assist in self defense and hunting prey.

While there are more than 1,000 different species of sea anemones, they tend to have similar characteristics. First, they have three main parts: a pedal disc (base or foot), a cylindrical body, and tentacles coming out of a central mouth.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the anemone’s various methods of multiplying. While some species do have specific sexes, other species are hermaphroditic, and can reproduce with or without another anemone. In sexual reproduction, sperm and eggs are released simultaneously, and the fertilized eggs will eventually settle and develop into a polyp, the foundation of the anemone. But the incredible anemone can also procreate asexually, by developing a “bud” on one of its tentacles that separates from the mother when it is fully mature, or through binary fission, where the anemone can actually split itself in two to become two new individuals, or pedal laceration, where a small piece severed off the foot can also regenerate into a new, fully functional anemone.
