Gauteng MEC for social development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza shut down the school after three disturbing videos of children being assaulted by the teacher emerged.   Mayathula-Khoza said the crèche was operating illegally, with a conditional certificate which expired two years ago.   The videos, including one where a little boy can be seen being violently dragged and slapped, have led to 40-year-old Senwametsi’s arrest. She was released on R3,000 bail.

Mayathula-Khoza said the videos were shocking, adding that crèche owner Janine Edward had pleaded ignorance despite parents saying they had complained to her about possible abuse.   “This is unacceptable. We condemn it in the strongest terms,” she said.    She urged parents to open a case against Edward as they claim that she had been aware of the abuse.

Yesterday, parents rushed to remove their children from the crèche while furious community members gathered outside the property.    The mother of a two-year-old girl, who can be seen in one of the videos being dragged and beaten, said she was horrified by what happened to her child.    In the video, the teacher can be heard screaming at the toddler while dragging her by the collar.

“My daughter is not the same anymore. She will sit in a corner and cry for no reason. She is traumatised,” she said.    The mother said she opened a case with police yesterday after viewing the video.   She said she removed her child from the creche last year after picking up that something was amiss but only saw the video a few days ago.   She said Edward had dismissed her when she complained that her daughter came home with bruises on her legs.   “I want justice for my child,” the mother said.

4 April – the family did not believe the child!

The grandmother of a three-year-old boy who attends the Ninnie’s Neurons Nursery  School on Wednesday said her grandson had on various occasions reported being beaten by the same teacher who was captured on three videos beating other children.   The grandmother said he had spoken about being hit at nursery school but the family thought he was just being reprimanded for being naughty.   Now, after seeing video clips of a teacher smacking and shoving children at the nursery school, she is heartbroken.   “He’s been reporting that the teacher had hit him on the head and his back. We took it lightly and thought he had been naughty and the teacher was merely reprimanding him,” said Mimmie.

She said the family had, however, questioned why the teacher would specifically hit the child on the head.    “I am heartbroken, honestly. We should have taken the child seriously and come to think of it children don’t just make things up,” she said.    She said outside the nursery school where the mood was tense as several parents arrived to demand answers and take their children home.    Three videos depicting various “assaults” by a woman at the nursery school surfaced on social media, causing outrage. If the dialogue heard on the video is anything to go by, one of the toddlers was beaten for vomiting, while another was beaten for not wanting to sleep.

The clips show how the caregiver repeatedly smacked a little girl on the buttocks, slapped the child on the head with open hands and beat another on the head with a wooden scrubbing brush.  One of the children was seen being grabbed and thrown on to the carpet, where the caregiver then puts her foot on the little boy’s head.   Another parent said she was heartbroken after seeing the videos on social media.   “I was at work when I saw the videos. The link was shared by my husband who’s currently in Cape Town. Can you imagine how he felt? I had to drop everything I was doing to attend to the school,” she said.     She said she was definitely moving her child elsewhere.   The nursery school’s Facebook page, which has since been removed, had earlier contained messages of praise from parents whose children went there.   Fees ranged between R1,500 to R2,500 a month.    Police confirmed on Thursday that the woman featured in the video clips was arrested last week and had since appeared in court.   “Police can confirm that a 40-year-old woman appeared on March 26 2019 in the Oberholzer court in Carletonville, on a charge of assaulting a minor,” said Brig Mathapelo Peters.    She is due in court again on May 7 and is out on bail.   Lawyer Danie van Zyl, representing the school principal, told reporters that the woman who had filmed the videos and allegedly leaked them was also being sought by the police.

According to Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, police spokesperson, the woman was released on bail on 28 March and is due back in court on 07 May.  “The case was postponed for further investigation. The police condemn in the harshest terms possible, both the incident  as well as the continued irresponsible circulation of the video clips on social media,” Peters said in a statement.

Netwerk24 has identified the woman who was charged with assault as Nellie Senwametsi (40). The videos which shows three toddlers severely being kicked and punched went viral on Thursday (4 April).       According to information received by the Herald, the video clips were taken about 18 months. The woman who filmed the video clips allegedly wanted to use them to blackmail the owner of Ninnie’s Neuron nursery school.   According to Netwerk24 the owner of the school Janine Edwards replied by way of her lawyer, Danie van Zyl. Van Zyl said that his client only became aware of the videos about two weeks ago when there was an attempt made to blackmail her. Edwards refused to pay and subsequently laid a complaint at the Carletonville police station.

Political parties and residents arrived in droves at the school on Thursday afternoon looking for answers.

Van Zyl alleged that the woman was fired from the school for another incident but had blackmailed the principal and threatened to leak the videos if she was not paid.

Police did not immediately confirm these allegations.

“With the court process having commenced and given that the investigation is yet to be concluded, police are not at liberty to divulge details or comment on this matter,” said Peters.

Peters said the police condemned the incident and “the continued irresponsible circulation of the video clips on social media platforms”.
