Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary

The Rock of Cashel (Carraig Phádraig) in Ireland is a medieval complex steeped in centuries of history, both royal and ecclesiastical.

Brian Boru, the legendary High King of Ireland who drove out the Vikings, was crowned at Cashel in 978, and made it his capital.

Cashel (Caiseal, meaning “stone ringfort”) is a town in County Tipperary in Ireland. Its population in 2016 was only 4422, but it’s one of Ireland’s top tourist draws: the Rock of Cashel is a limestone outcrop with a collection of important medieval sites.

However, most of the structures found today at the Rock of Cashel date not to the time of the Eóganacht Dynasty, but to between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. These were built after the Eóganacht were ousted from power by the kings of Dál Cais in the tenth century. In 1101, the then king of Dál Cais, Muircheartach Ua Briain, gave the Rock of Cashel to the Church. Most of the historic sites seen there today were built under the remit of the church.

The sites include the twelfth century Round Tower and Cormac’s Chapel, the latter being a pretty Romanesque church with remarkable frescoes. However the largest structure is the cathedral, initially constructed in the thirteenth century.

The first documented occupants were the Eóganachta, who ruled Munster from the 6th to 10th C AD. They were ousted by the O’Briens under Brian Boru, whose great-grandson King Muircheartach O’Brien gifted the site to the church in 1101. Park at the foot of the rock and follow the walkway. Enter through the Hall of the Vicars Choral, built 15th C to house the cathedral choristers. Then pass through the cathedral (13th C Gothic) and Archbishop’s Residence (15th C), with the Round Tower (11th / 12th C) by one corner. The highlight is the Romanesque Cormac’s Chapel, completed in 1127 – give your eyes time to adjust to the gloom, to pick out the rich carvings and frescos. There are High Crosses in the graveyard.

Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, the Rock of Cashel, iconic in its historic significance, possesses the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland. Among the monuments to be found there is a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

At the back, you’ll find a hint towards Ireland’s Viking past. A sarcophagus, rumoured to contain the remains of King Cormac’s brother Tadhg, is engraved with an elegant carving of two intertwining beasts – a symbol said to invoke blessings for an eternal life.

The round tower, built in 1100 and rising 28 metres above the ground, is said to be the Rock’s oldest surviving building. You can no longer climb the tower, but the views around it are simply sublime.

With icons of everlasting life, centuries-old heritage and legacy literally written in stone, is there any doubt that the Rock of Cashel is the ultimate rock star?
