Oos-Kaap – Eastern Cape (Balloch)

*

Balloch is a natural heritage site because of the Cape and Bearded Vulture colonies that nest in the basalt cliffs which form a broad band in the mountains.
Balloch is situated in the Wartrail area of the Barkly East district in the Eastern Cape. It is close to the southern tip of Lesotho, which can be accessed via the beautiful Lundeans Nek and is the perfect stop over for trips into and out of Lesotho using the Telle Bridge border crossing.

This very scenic pass is located on a minor gravel road – the P3222 – that connects farms in the Wartrail and New England areas with Rhodes and the R393 in the east and Barkly East and the R58 main road in the west. It has an unusual inverted vertical profile with a steep drop down into a valley bisected by a river, followed by a climb up the eastern side, which is a false summit. Despite it being a remote country road, the pass is well designed and has fairly easy gradients of 1:10 and higher. It will always be driven in tandem with the Wintersnek Pass a few kilometres further to the west. The pass is suitable for all vehicles in fair weather, but like all gravel roads, it can deteriorate rapidly in heavy rain or snow conditions.

Lupela Nature Reserve is situated in a peaceful and scenic valley in the Witteberg Mountains on the farm Camp, 17.5 km from Lady-Grey on the R58. There is a 5.4km stretch of gravel road from the R58 to the farm camp. Here you have the opportunity to do fishing, day hikes, swimming, bird watching and mountain biking or just relaxing.  The Karnemelkspruit flows for 7km through the property and you can enjoy fishing one of the best trout streams in the country.
