State capture – Zondo commission – Molefe – Gigaba – Guptas

Dit is uiters verstommend  dat hierdie sake waar daar soveel korrupsie betrokke is op hoë vlak, uitgerek word.    Soms klink of almal net in sirkels praat,  min vervolgings is aan die orde van die dag.   Watter magte het ‘n kommissie regtig – dis dan ook ‘n Aangestelde kommissie deur die ANC wat korrupsie ondersoek.  Hoe langer dit uitrek hoe meer word daar gewag om die persone by korrupsie te vervolg.   Dis ons belastinggeld wat daarvoor aangewend word en die wat die geld laat verdwyn, verdwyn oor die horison.

Transnet had originally set R39bn for the purchase of more than 1,000 locomotives, but this increased to R54bn. Former Transnet CEO Brian Molefe on Wednesday conceded that he should take responsibility for the state-owned company allowing the price for 1,064 locomotives to go from R39bn to R54bn.

The increases were, however, done without the approval of the minister of public enterprises – in contravention of the law for transactions of that magnitude.

Transnet board chairperson Popo Molefe took the stand at the state capture inquiry where he told Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo that former Transnet bosses Brian Molefe, Anoj Singh and Siyabonga Gama authorised an increase in the cost of locomotives – from R3.8 billion to R4.4 billion.

It was stated that the three former bodyguards and a driver, who gave evidence under identity protection, and only identified as Witness 1, 2 and 3, had accused Molefe, former Transnet boss Siyabonga Gama and former minister Malusi Gigaba of having often left the Gupta Saxonwold compound with bags filled with R200 notes when they visited. Before the cross-examination got underway, the commission’s head of the legal team advocate Paul Pretorius pointed out that there had been an assassination attempt against Witness 1, who implicated Molefe. Zondo slammed the assassination attempt, stating they were meant to intimidate and attack those who wanted to assist the nation in uncovering state capture.

It was previously stated that the former Transnet chair Brian Molefe has denied ever receiving money from the controversial Gupta family, but concedes he has visited their home in Saxonwold. Two former bodyguards told the State Capture Commission of Inquiry how Malusi Gigaba and Molefe used to visit the Guptas’ compound to collect mysterious bags. One witness explained that he drove Molefe around to the Gupta residence in Saxonwold on several occasions, where he would often carry a light brown backpack.

13 August 2020 – Threats
Three anonymous witnesses appeared before the state capture commission of inquiry and provided evidence implicating former Transnet bosses and former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba in allegations of state capture. The three witnesses were former bodyguards and drivers of Gigaba, Brian Molefe, Anoj Singh, and Siyabonga Gama and have detailed the visits they made at the Gupta family properties.

He said he was a driver for Gigaba during his term as public enterprises minister. He said the former minister told him not to record the trips to Saxonwold. Advocate Paul Pretorius said the man was in witness protection.

A witness told the commission that he was a driver for Gigaba during his term as public enterprises minister.

He said Gigaba would visit the gutpa residence where he collected bags of cash and bought tailored suits with the money. Gigaba denies this. Solomon asked: “But would not that have been a breach of protocol? You were not a member of the SAPS and you were not authorised to drive Mr Gigaba anywhere; do you agree?” Witness three said: “I was given instructions by the minister himself.”

Solomon said: “I also want to put it to you that he denies visiting the residence on the number of occasion that you’ve described. At most, it would’ve been once or twice during that period.” “I went with the minister to the residence about six or seven times,” witness three added.
