Nazca lines Peru

There are more than 140 images  been discovered, etched into a coastal desert plain about 250 miles southeast of Lima, the Peruvian capital. The Japanese researchers who found them combined on-the-ground work with the most modern of tools: satellite photography, three-dimensional imaging and, in one case, artificial intelligence.

A huge carving of a monkey with its tail twirled in a spiral; vast, geometric images of a condor and a hummingbird; an immense spider — the 2,000-year-old Nazca Lines in Peru have awed and mystified modern viewers since they were first seen from the air last century.

The newly discovered carvings, or geoglyphs, depict human forms and a broad variety of animals, including camelids, a group of mammals that includes llamas and alpacas; cats; fish; and snakes, according to the research group from Yamagata University.

The shapes, some of which are believed to date from at least 100 B.C., were mainly identified in the western side of the area through fieldwork — picking through pottery remnants, stones and soil — and by analyzing high-resolution imagery, the university said in a statement last week. The largest are more than 300 feet long.  Masato Sakai, a professor of cultural anthropology and Andean archaeology who led the research team, said in a video about the discovery that the enigmatic drawings must become more visible to ensure their survival.

Around 800 of the enormous lines have been found across the desert, and are so big they can generally only be identified properly from the air.

Now archaeologists at Japan’s Yamagata University reveal that 143 new Nazca lines have been discovered.

It’s part of a 15-year research effort that has used satellite imagery, drone footage and AI scanning systems.

The huge and mysterious etchings depict strange figures, including ancient “humanoids”, double-headed snakes and even a “killer whale”.

Nazca Lines – the key facts

Here’s what you need to know…

  • The Nazca Lines are a group of giant “designs” made in the soil of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru
  • They’re typically made through depressions or shallow incisions
  • It’s believed that they were created between 500BC and 500AD
  • Many of the designs depict humans, animals and plants
  • And they typically measure anywhere from 0.2 miles to 0.7 miles across
  • Each line is generally cut around four to six inches deep, and around one foot wide
  • They’re best seen from the air at an altitude of around 1,500 feet
  • The isolated and windless nature of the plateau has helped preserve many of the lines
  • But new lines that are more faded are still being discovered today
  • The purpose of the lines is still largely a mystery, but experts believe they may have served as messages to the gods
  • It’s also possible that they were used for astronomical purposes

Discovered in 1927 by archaeologist toribio majia xesspe, the nazca lines are ancient geoglyphs located in the nazca desert in southern peru. the lines, which were created by removing the red rocks to uncover the white ground beneath, are in the forms of monkeys, spiders, birds and other animals and figures. they can be seen from the hills surrounding the plateau and from the air.

Huge thanks to Michael Wolf for alerting me about this story! A team of Japanese researchers from Yamagata University and IBM Research have discovered an incredible 143 stunning geoglyphs, etched into the desert in southern Peru around the enigmatic Nazca Lines.

It is yet another example of how technology is assisting archaeology because a number of images were found using state-of-the-art AI technology developed by IBM, finds that were then confirmed with an on-site investigations.

The geoglyphs include humans, birds, camels, cats and other animals and were found between 2016 and 2018. They were identified through fieldwork and analysing high-resolution 3D data and aerial photography. Incredibly, one geoglyph in particular was solely discovered with AI technology, without the aid of humans, making it the first geoglyph discovered by an AI.

Back in April 2018 I reported in a video that Peruvian archaeologists in the Palpa province of Peru had discovered more than 50 new geoglyphs

“In addition, we determined that some of the geoglyphs depicted a number of specific birds, including hermit, pelicans, and what is most likely an immature parrot. Each of these birds is regionally exotic. For instance, hermits and parrots are found in tropical rain forests whereas pelicans live in coastal areas.”
Mystery Of Peru’s Huge Nazca Lines – Peru

The Nazca lines were discovered in the Peruvian desert in 1939, 200 miles south of Lima. They were created between 200BC and 600AD by the Nazca Indians – or maybe aliens???
